Tai Chi is a slow-moving mind/body exercise with gentle flowing movements that
[. . .]
contains an inner power to strengthen the body and relax the mind while promoting better health, balance, and posture. Often described as “meditation in motion”, this program uses the Sun Style of Tai Chi which is both easier on the joints and easier to learn than other styles of Tai Chi. This class will use the evidence-based Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention program created by Dr. Paul Lam, and approved by the American Arthritis Foundation, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Council on Aging.
While all adults are welcome, the class is geared for those 50+ or for those who have mild to moderate balance difficulties. It does not require any prior tai chi or martial arts experience. For those who have difficulty standing or walking unassisted, the program can be performed seated with minimal adjustments. If you think you may need to perform your tai chi seated, please let the instructor know at the first class.
Classes are held in the outpatient therapy gym on the ground floor of the AMITA Rehabilitation Hospital (Entrance 2) and are taught by an experienced instructor certified by the Tai Chi for Health Institute. Each 1-hour class will begin with warm-up exercises before reviewing of past moves, learning 1-2 new moves and finishing with cool down exercises. Please wear comfortable clothes and comfortable, supportive shoes to this class.
Virus precautions including temperature checks, social distancing and face coverings are required for classes at this location. Please bring a face mask that you are comfortable wearing for light exercise.
For any questions on this program, please contact the instructor, Diana Nielsen, at TCAFP.DN@GMAIL.COM .
Please note: There will be no classes on Tuesday, November 9th.
